LA CONGONA – LEYMEBAMBA

La Congona is an excellent day trip back and forth from Leymebamba while there to see the museum of Leymebamba. This is one of the entire zone’s most decorated smaller citadels.  Morgan Davis relates it to being like an ornate palace on a mountain peak in the clouds.  It has many varieties of very ornate friezes on its stone buildings and defensive tower.  This can be done by horseback or moderate difficult hike.  Like other ruins in the cloud forest, its walls are covered with orchids and bromeliads.  Although La Congona and other ruins nearby are not on an Inca road, the trek has spectacular panoramic sights.
