LEYMEBAMBA MUSEUM

The Leymebamba museum is the best museum in the zone directed by Dra. Sonia Guillen.  Located south of Chachapoyas at only 10 minutes from the town of Leymebamba (the Fifth City of the Chachapoyas) and 3.5 hours from Chachapoyas city.   This museum was built by the ONG Centro Mallqui, the community of Leymebamba and donations from the government of Austria and was inaugurated in the year 2000.   You can also find a orchid display inside the museum with varieties of Orchids from the zone.

The museum houses the 219 mummies that were discovered in 1997 by a group of local farmers.  These mummies were located 10 hours horseback on a cliff under a waterfall by the Lake of the Mummies or Lake of the Condors.  Research is being conducted in this museum under the supervision of Dra. Sonia Guillen.

The main Inca road passes through Levanto and Raymipampa  (now Leymebamba) on its way to Cuzco.
