YALAPE – LEVANTO

Located in Levanto. Yalape, which at one time had been a large semi-fortified town , however, it was obvious than in later years, at the time of the Incas conquest, Yalap or Yalape had lost its defensive nature, and become an immense luxurious residential district. The site is located in top of a hill, surrounded by gentle slopes, themselves surrounded by walls that had been beautifully constructed and decorated, but not unusually high. Yalap appeared militarily vulnerable, if not indefensible. Its shape was not simple like that of Kuelap or Ollape, rather it sprawled over a wide area, and some sections seemed to have been added at different times, without any regard to defence. The renovations and additions were easily identifiable, for like TEYA, vertical joints in the masonry were common. Numerous right-angled corners indicated that new walls had been superimposed in front of older ones, giving the impression that YALAP had been under continuous construction lay entirely outside the main walls.
