In 1985 Charles and Tina Motley were among the early visitors to this remote zone and conceived the idea of organizing an effort to have tourism preserve this pristine zone. We have 2 lodges with modern bathrooms, kitchens, and comforts to provide access to these incredible ruins hidden in the cloud forest. We formalized an alliance with the archaeological board (INC) and exclusively build lodges within the restricted 5 km zone of these ancient monuments. We work with the INC to provide their access and security to the ruins. Our mission is to provide a protected park around the best ruins, while cooperating with the villages to maintain harmony without impacting the ruins. Los Tambos Chachapoyanos mission is to offer a system which allows the private sector to finance protection in an orderly planned development of this zone, --- instead of it "self destructing into chaos". The INC, the villages, and local people are extremely enthusiastic about our project, and are coming forth with loads of newly found ruins and wanting us to expand our mission into their land. This zone has the best and most ruins of the Andes and so far is the friendliest, best fed, least populated, safest area of Peru, --- and lacks corruption, thieves, beggars, etc. that grow and feed on tourism. Agencies which use our lodges and logistical support are directly contributing to preserve this pristine zone. We do not raise funds by trash mail, begging or solicitations. Agencies and providers that choose not to use our lodges seek a cost edge by avoiding the baggage of benefiting the zone. You can be assured that if your agent uses our lodges, they are getting the best bargains because imitators that exploit the zone can not match our attitude or volume pricing. A third of the lodge income goes to projects to preserve and restore the ruins, or enhance their land for tourism. Our modern tambos are modeled exactly on the ancient ones, --- but have all modern comforts inside their rustic buildings. These "stand alone units" may be days away from any other comfortable beds, flush toilets, or hot showers, and a tiny oasis in a pristine wilderness.
